Pentecost is a time for celebration! It is the birthday of the Church! It the celebration of the giving of the Holy Spirit! We will Celebrate Pentecost June 8, 2014.
When we celebrate Christmas – the birth of our Lord and Savior – we dress up to come to Christmas – the Nativity of our Lord! When we celebrate the Death and Resurrection of our Lord and Savior and come to Easter we dress up in bright light colors. So why not dress up to celebrate the giving of the Holy Spirit – God’s presence with us Always. In the giving of the Spirit of God – the flame is used!
Why? In the Scriptures, Luke shares that the disciples heard the sound of a rushing wind and Luke tells us that tongues of fire settled upon them. Like the burning bush of Moses’ day, the disciples appeared to burn, but the fire did not consume them. The flame – the fire of motivation is the Spirit at work. The traditional color for this day is RED – a very bright red – flame colored! White is also used for the dove. Orange and Yellow come from the flame too as you watch a flame – you see it.
So in this celebration of our exciting and vibrant faith – a faith alive in Christ – alive in the Spirit – I encourage the wearing of Red – Orange – Yellow to remind us of Pentecost, this Special Day in the live if the Christian.
From the giving of the Spirit – Pentecost – the disciples boldly moved forward to proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. It is my prayer that we feel, know, become Alive in the Spirit that transforms and move forth to share our faith in mission and ministry.
